For some time now, I have been following a blog run by a New
York City photographer. His name is Brandon and his site is called “Humans of
New York”. The site has gotten much attention since it began in the summer of
2010. What he does is wander around the city with his camera and his sense of
curiosity. There are undoubtedly some interesting charters wandering those
streets. This blog is especially appealing to me because I’ve always been
interested in telling people’s stories. The age old saying “you can’t judge a
book by a cover” is the main take away that I took from this blog. Visitors
quickly learnt that the site was originally meant as “an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s
inhabitants”. Any good idea develops or alters over time, as did this one.
Photographs were soon accompanied by quick quotations from the person
photographed. Then, a tab at the top of the page was added with more in depth
stories. Brandon began asking questions like “what was the best day of your
life” or “where do you want to be in 10 years”. I find the site to be so
engaging and interesting that I always find myself scrolling for longer than
intended. Humans of New York in an innovative idea that I really admire as a
simple concept that came to be admired by many.
